The "Most users ever online" includes "guests" who have just landed on the home page, not registered or signed in. I suspect that a bunch of potential spammers may have landed on the site. ProphpBB has very good spammer detection and rejection so that most can't even register.

It could also be the result of Google/Yahoo/Ask/Bing searches and people clicked on the link to our website home page.
