lawsuit against NASCAR champion Stewart dismissed

Post by beaverpond »

A wrongful death lawsuit against three-time NASCAR Cup series champion Tony Stewart was officially dismissed on Wednesday, according to ESPN.

Stewart was involved in a fatal incident during a sprint car race at Canandaigua Motorsports Park back in 2014, after the Stewart-Haas Racing co-owner collided with Kevin Ward Jr.

Ward had exited his car and walked down the track gesticulating at Stewart during the subsequent caution when he was hit by Stewart's rear wheel.

The 20-year-old's parents filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Stewart in 2015, claiming he had shown "disregard" to Ward's life, but an Ontario County grand jury cleared Stewart of any wrongdoing shortly after.
The two sides reached a settlement in April and the case has now been officially dismissed.

It means the case will be closed after a period of 30 days, although that timeframe allows for the case to be reopened if the terms of the settlement are not set. The settlement remains confidential.
