Stewart-Haas Racing to appeal Phoenix penalty

By: Lee Spencer, NASCAR Senior Writer

Stewart-Haas Racing will appeal the penalties handed down by NASCAR following post-race inspection on the No. 4 Ford at Phoenix Raceway.

Crew chief Rodney Childers is facing a one-race suspension and a fine of $25,000 after the team was penalized for a non-approved track bar slider assembly. Kevin Harvick was assessed with the loss of 10 driver points. Gene Haas was docked 10 owner points.

The team released the following statement: Stewart-Haas Racing has officially requested an appeal hearing regarding the penalties levied against the No. 4 team and have also requested a deferral of the penalties until the appeal process is complete.

Harvick finished sixth in Sunday?s Camping World 500. He?s currently seventh in the Monster Energy Cup standings, 61 points behind Kyle Larson.

NASCAR confirmed to Motorsport that they have deferred the penalty for the No. 4 until the appeal is heard.

What happens to the money from the penalties?
Since the start of the 2008 season, all money collected from fines issued to drivers go to NASCAR,
then NASCAR donates the money to the NASCAR Foundation for its charitable initiatives.
The drivers do NOT get a tax deduction on fines.
Before 2008, the money collected from driver/crew member penalties are generally placed into the Drivers Points Fund awarded at the end of the season.
