Rich Energy CEO says company's own statement was "ludicrous"

By Scott Mitchell, Charles Bradley | @ScottAutosport , @Motorsport_Ed | Published on Thursday July 11th 2019

A new statement attributed to Rich Energy CEO William Storey has blasted the company's own communication in a fresh twist to the Haas Formula 1 team's title sponsor saga.

On Wednesday, a Tweet emerged from the energy drink's account announcing that it had terminated its deal with Haas due to "poor performance".

The post added that F1's "politics and PC attitude" were "inhibiting our business", and finishing behind Williams in the Austrian Grand Prix was "unacceptable".

Haas released a statement on behalf of Rich Energy's apparent majority shareholders that attempted to salvage the relationship with the team, and accused a "rogue" individual of being responsible for the original tweet.

That statement also said the individual, understood to be Storey, was being removed from his executive responsibilities.

However, on Thursday evening, a subsequent tweet from the Rich Energy account contained a statement attributed to Storey that claimed the Haas statement was the work of supposed minority shareholders and that he remained in command.

The tweet read: "The ludicrous statement by minority shareholders cosy with Red Bull and Whyte Bikes is risible.

"Their attempted palace coup has failed.

"I [Storey] control all of the assets of Rich Energy and have support of all key stakeholders".

Haas F1 team boss Gunther Steiner confirmed that the team would be running Rich Energy branding as usual during this weekend's British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

In a statement, Steiner said: "Rich Energy is currently the title partner of Haas F1 Team.

"I cannot comment further on the contractual relationship between our two parties due to commercial confidentiality."

The Rich Energy logos remained on display at Haas ahead of the grand prix, although the firm has been ordered by court to give up use of its stag logo after July 18 for it infringes the copyright of Whyte Bikes.

There has been no further comment from Haas in light of the latest statement.

Haas sponsor saga takes fresh twist as Rich Energy is renamed

By: Adam Cooper | Jul 16, 2019, 3:12 PM

Controversial CEO William Storey is no longer associated with the Rich Energy company he founded, UK government documents have confirmed, with it now being renamed ‘Lightning Volt’.

Storey had been in dispute with shareholders of the company since last Wednesday, when he announced on Twitter that the sponsorship with the Haas F1 team had been terminated. Those shareholders subsequently stated that the deal is ongoing, and have been trying to wrestle control from Storey, who had continued to insist via the Rich Energy Twitter feed that he was still in charge and could not be removed.

However, Storey confirmed his departure on the Rich Energy via Twitter today, noting: “William Storey founder of @rich_energy has sold his majority stake in the legal entity of Rich Energy limited. This decision was reluctantly reached due to the duplicitous conduct of minority stakeholders. To quote @Schwarzenegger he will be back!”

Information filed at Companies House today confirmed that Storey’s appointment as a director had been terminated, as has that of his Croatian colleague Zoran Terzic. In addition, Storey is no longer “a person with significant control”.

Storey has been replaced in that role by Matthew Kell, who has also been appointed a director. Documents say that Kell holds more than 75% of the shares of the company, “directly or indirectly”.

The registered address of Rich Energy was originally changed earlier today from Storey’s Richmond base to a London company called The BDG Group. However, shortly afterwards a second piece of paperwork was logged which omitted the The BDG Group name, while retaining the same Notting Hill address.

The BDG Group’s involvement in Rich/Lightning Volt is unclear. However, the company’s website says that as the “UK’s leading unlicensed Insolvency Practitioners we offer a genuine alternative to our clients which will give you a clean bill of health going forwards, your reputation will be intact, and we’ll deal with all the outstanding issues.”

Re: Haas F1 & Rich Energy

The title sponsorship agreement between the Haas Formula 1 team and Rich Energy has been terminated with immediate effect, with the team citing "a corporate restructuring process" at Rich as the impetus.

While the Rich Energy deal was the inspiration behind Haas' current black-and-gold livery, the latest decision will not impact the primary colour scheme of the VF-19, which now simply run without the branding of its now-former title sponsor.

The new energy drink company had come on board with Haas before the start of the year, having previously explored opportunities with other teams like Williams, Force India and McLaren.

But the nascent partnership between Rich and Haas was placed in doubt as early as July, when Rich Energy's then-CEO William Storey announced he had "terminated" the deal with the American F1 team due to "poor performance".

The deal was seemingly preserved by shareholders and Rich Energy's branding has remained on the VF-19 in the subsequent races, including last weekend's Italian Grand Prix.

But with team boss Gunther Steiner confirming in late August that Rich would take a final decision on the contract before the upcoming Singapore Grand Prix, a statement from the American outfit has now confirmed an "amicable" end to the partnership.

"Haas F1 team and Rich Energy have amicably agreed to end their partnership together in the FIA Formula One World Championship with immediate effect," the statement read.

"While enjoying substantial brand recognition and significant exposure through its title partnership of Haas F1 Team in 2019, a corporate restructuring process at Rich Energy will see the need for a revised global strategy.

"Subsequently, Haas F1 Team and Rich Energy concluded a termination of the existing partnership was the best way forward for both parties.

"Haas F1 Team would like to express its thanks and best wishes to the stakeholders at Rich Energy."
